Description
The main objective of the MG collection is the safeguard of genetic resources of herbaceous plants interesting for Italian and Mediterranean agriculture. A particular attention is devoted to specific segments of plant genetic resources, such as crop landraces (including “typical products”) or agro-ecotypes threaten with extinction, crop wild relatives, and plants potentially useful for the extraction of bioactive or technological compounds. The main commitments of the genebank since 1970 up to now may be summarized as follows: (i) collection of the Plant Genetic Resources (PGR); (ii) conservation of PGR; (iii) distribution of PGR; (iv) characterization and evaluation of PGR; (v) Analysis of the genetic structure of PGR; (vi) Selection and pre-breeding; (iv) recognition of useful genes. MG collection contains more than 59,000 accessions of 869 species from 200 genera and 37 families (mainly Poaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae, Brassicaceae, Asteraceae, etc.). Over 13,000 samples have been directly collected through time by exploration teams of the Institute of Biosciences and Bioresources, while others have been acquired from other Institutions through exchange activities.
