Main Taxa
Accessions of pear (Pyrus communis L.) and apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh).
Description
The Pomaceae ex situ collection encloses about 90 pear and 25 apple accessions belonging to the Sardinian germplasm. Most are at risk of genetic erosion and original mother plants of some are anymore available. Several pear accessions played a key role as animal feed in the bygone agro pastoral-ecosystem of the isle and are still present along livestock transhumance routes. The peculiarity of the collected local pear accessions stays in the broad harvesting period (late May until end of November). GCPOM goals are: (1) safeguard of pomacee genetic resources useful for their resilience to biotic/abiotic stresses; (2) restoration of degraded agro pastoral ecosystems by implementing specific pear accessions in the pasture land; (3) select and implement accessions with nutritional and functional properties.
Keywords
Agriculture, Preservation of old fruit varieties, Resilience to biotic/abiotic stress, Food, Health
Preservation Techniques
Ex situ: one field collection with 4 and 12 replicates of each pear and apple accession, respectively; In situ: 6 fields with both pomacee collections in different protected areas of the Regional Forest and Environment Agency.
Services
Accession distribution for research and local exploitation; provide info on bio-agronomic and health properties of the accessions to SME and local authorities
